What are you doing on Saturday? – San Diego Planes or San Diego Padres

This Saturday, February 12, 2011,  is a big day in Cool Stuff To Do in San Diego!  –  First, we have the Centennial of Naval Aviation at Coronado’s North Island.  Simultaneously, The San Diego Padres kickoff their 2011 campaign with Padres FanFest 2011.  Both events provide the public with access to places normally off limits to the public.  North Island normally only has one public event a year, The Coronado Speed Festival and it is focused on classic auto racing.  The Padres are opening up the field at Petco Park to the public in a way unlike they do at any other time of year.     If you can’t decide which event is for you, Petco Park and almost all of the Downtown San Diego area will be a great vantage point to view the Navy flyover.  I haven’t figured out if we will be attending one or both of these events, but I do know that either one of these events beats shoveling snow!

About the Centennial of Naval Aviation

On February 17, 1911, inventor and aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss taxied his seaplane to the battleship USS PENNSYLVANIA anchored in San Diego Bay. A boat hoisted the “hydroaeroplane” aboard the ship. Later, it was lowered to the water and Curtiss returned to North Island. This historic event, more than any other, prompted the Secretary of the Navy’s decision to purchase the Navy’s first aircraft. The Navy is celebrating this historic event with the:
